AB - <p><strong>A study was conducted to estimate the amount of maize that could be conse</strong><strong>rve</strong><strong>d by substituting cocoa </strong><strong>pod </strong><strong>husk </strong><strong>(</strong><strong>CPH</strong><strong>) </strong><strong>for maize </strong><strong>in </strong><strong>l</strong><strong>i</strong><strong>vestock </strong><strong>fe</strong><strong>e</strong><strong>ds. </strong><strong>F</strong><strong>o</strong><strong>r </strong><strong>this </strong><strong>p</strong><strong>urpose </strong><strong>a </strong><strong>c</strong><strong>onversion coefficient between dry c</strong><strong>o</strong><strong>co</strong><strong>a </strong><strong>beans and dry CPH </strong><strong>was </strong><strong>estimated by </strong><strong>using data collected from </strong><strong>a </strong><strong>survey </strong><strong>of </strong><strong>50 c</strong><strong>ocoa </strong><strong>farms</strong><strong>. </strong><strong>Some </strong><strong>livest</strong><strong>o</strong><strong>ck </strong><strong>feed millers in </strong><strong>Nigeria </strong><strong>were also survey</strong><strong>e</strong><strong>d to o</strong><strong>b</strong><strong>tain </strong><strong>the </strong><strong>composition of </strong><strong>feeds </strong><strong>for different livestock </strong><strong>species</strong><strong>. </strong></p><p><strong>Using </strong><strong>the </strong><strong>conversion coefficient between </strong><strong>dry </strong><strong>c</strong><strong>oc</strong><strong>oa beans and dry CPH </strong><strong>together with </strong><strong>dry </strong><strong>c</strong><strong>oc</strong><strong>oa </strong><strong>bean outputs betw</strong><strong>ee</strong><strong>n </strong><strong>1970 </strong><strong>and </strong><strong>1996 it </strong><strong>was </strong><strong>estimated that </strong><strong>Nigeria pr</strong><strong>oduced </strong><strong>an average </strong><strong>of </strong><strong><em>2</em></strong><strong>74,</strong><strong>800 </strong><strong>metric </strong><strong>tonnes of </strong><strong>C</strong><strong>PH </strong><strong>pe</strong><strong>r </strong><strong>year</strong><strong>. </strong></p><p><strong>Usin</strong><strong>g </strong><strong>t</strong><strong>h</strong><strong>e </strong><strong>a</strong><strong>mount </strong><strong>o</strong><strong>f li</strong><strong>ve</strong><strong>stoc</strong><strong>k </strong><strong>f</strong><strong>eed </strong><strong>c</strong><strong>onsumption </strong><strong>in </strong><strong>Nigeria </strong><strong>from 1977 - </strong><strong><em>1</em></strong><strong>996 and the percentage </strong><strong>of </strong><strong>maize component </strong><strong>of </strong><strong>the </strong><strong>rations</strong><strong>, </strong><strong>t</strong><strong>h</strong><strong>e </strong><strong>amount </strong><strong>of </strong><strong>maize uti</strong><strong>li</strong><strong>zed </strong><strong>in </strong><strong>lives</strong><strong>toc</strong><strong>k seeds </strong><strong>for </strong><strong>the </strong><strong>period </strong><strong>was estim</strong><strong>ate</strong><strong>d </strong><strong>6 </strong><strong>Further, using t</strong><strong>h</strong><strong>e safe levels of CPH substitutio</strong><strong>n </strong><strong>in </strong><strong>the </strong><strong>various livesto</strong><strong>-</strong><strong>k </strong><strong>fe</strong><strong>e</strong><strong>ds </strong><strong>as s</strong><strong>u</strong><strong>g</strong><strong>gest</strong><strong>e</strong><strong>d by </strong><strong>research </strong><strong>cond</strong><strong>uc</strong><strong>ted in the past, </strong><strong>th</strong><strong>e </strong><strong>a</strong><strong>mount o</strong><strong>f </strong><strong>maize </strong><strong>which could </strong><strong>b</strong><strong>e </strong><strong>conse</strong><strong>rved </strong><strong>b</strong><strong>y </strong><strong>incorporating </strong><strong>CPH in </strong><strong>the </strong><strong>various feed types was estimated </strong><strong>a</strong><strong>s </strong><strong>an </strong><strong>annual </strong><strong>avera</strong><strong>g</strong><strong>e </strong><strong>of 39</strong><strong>,</strong><strong>473 </strong><strong><em>m</em></strong><strong>etric </strong><strong>tonnes </strong><strong>of </strong><strong>maize. </strong><strong>This </strong><strong>saying </strong><strong>was </strong><strong>found </strong><strong>to </strong><strong>bridge </strong><strong>the </strong><strong>deficit between demand </strong><strong>a</strong><strong>nd </strong><strong>supp</strong><strong>ly </strong><strong>as </strong><strong>given </strong><strong>by </strong><strong>s</strong><strong>upplementation </strong><strong>don</strong><strong>e </strong><strong>b</strong><strong>y </strong><strong>importing </strong><strong>maize</strong><strong>. </strong><strong>The study concluded </strong><strong>that </strong><strong>by </strong><strong>utilizing (</strong><strong>CPH) </strong><strong>in compounding </strong><strong>various </strong><strong>liv</strong><strong>estoc</strong><strong>k </strong><strong>feed </strong><strong>rations</strong><strong>, </strong><strong>the high price </strong><strong>of </strong><strong>maize </strong><strong>arising </strong><strong>from </strong><strong>excessive </strong><strong>demand </strong><strong>c</strong><strong>an b</strong><strong>e reduced</strong><strong>. </strong><strong>The </strong><strong>limiting </strong><strong>role </strong><strong>of </strong><strong>maize in making </strong><strong>available </strong><strong>livestock feeds </strong><strong>will </strong><strong>be alleviated. Furthermore</strong><strong>, </strong><strong>increased </strong><strong>revenue </strong><strong>t</strong><strong>o coco</strong><strong>a pr</strong><strong>oduce</strong><strong>rs </strong><strong>would a</strong><strong>ccr</strong><strong>ue a</strong><strong>s </strong><strong>result </strong><strong>o</strong><strong>f </strong><strong>a</strong><strong>dditional </strong><strong>revenue generat</strong><strong>e</strong><strong>d from sale o</strong><strong>f CPH </strong><strong>and good environmental sanitation reducing the incidence of black pod disease and consequently reducing investment in chemicals and labour for the control of the disease. Finally, more malze would be available for human consumption and the supplementation that was done in the form of maize importation may not be necessary. </strong></p>
